SOUTH EASTERN WELSH SPRINGER SPANIEL CLUB

25TH JANUARY 2026

Thank you to the committee for thinking of me and pulling forward my judging appointment by a year,  due to Carol Madley being unfortunately taken ill, and I wish her a speedy recover.  Thank you also to my stewards, Hillary Male and Jolanta Grigonyte for keeping the ring running smoothly all day.  Thank you to all the exhibitors that came on the day knowing that I was a replacement judge.

South Eastern Welsh Springer Spaniel Club Single Breed Open Show 25th January 2026

Special Classes

Thank you to the South Eastern Welsh Springer Spaniel Club for giving me the opportunity to judge your lovely dogs at your open show. I consider it a privilege to judge the special classes at a breed specific show and was looking forward to this appointment. I was a little disappointed that the entry was numerically very small, however I was delighted with the animals that came under me on the day.

Junior d/b no entries

Post Graduate d/b (1/0) 1st Gaylor and Robertson's Gilstonia Run Red Rum for Aprilflash:- 21 month male of nice type. He had a well balanced masculine head with dark brown eyes which gave him a lovely soft expression. He had a clearly defined stop, good finish to muzzle and dark nostrils. He had a long muscular neck which flowed seamlessly into his withers and was free from throatiness. His ear set was moderately low. He was sound in the front displaying straight and strong bone. He was deep in brisket and had adequate forechest and well sprung ribs. He had a strong muscular loin and good tail set on a strong croup. His hindlegs were muscular and wide with a well developed 2nd thigh and he had a good bend of stifle and short well let down hocks culminating in small round tight feet He moved very well to and fro maintaining his level topline all the time with a lively tail which unfortunately he was a little proud of today. His coat was a rich red, dense straight and silky in texture with feathering still to come. Very nice for his age!

Open d/b (3/1) 1st Gaylor and Robertson's Sh Ch Heniveruce King of Brewers for Aprilflash ShCE X presented a lovely overall picture of a completely finished Welsh Springer. He had a balanced skull to muzzle ratio with a defined stop and dark hazel. medium eye with enough chiselling to give a kindly expression. Perhaps could have had a slightly more square finish of muzzle. He had moderately low placed ears hanging close to his cheeks. He had a lovely long well muscled and clean neck free from throatiness. He excelled in his front angulation having well laid back shoulders coupled with a good forechest. He was sound in the front displaying a straight front when viewed from the front with strong straight boning. His well sprung ribs culminated in his slightly arched loin, good croup and tail set. His hindquarters were well muscled and broad with well developed 2nd thigh, adequate stifles and well let down hocks and nice tight round feet. He moved well in both directions with drive from his strong rear end. His lightly feathered tail was lively on the move but would have preferred if he had carried it level with his back. He was presented in beautiful condition with his rich red contrasting with his pearly white silky straight coat with moderate feathering across his belly which created a lovely finish on a very nice dog which I liked enormously
2nd Woodham's Glynell Jiffy:- This 10 year old strongly made male had personality plus. He had a well balanced skull to muzzle ratio . I would have preferred to see a more domed skull. He had a nice square finish to his muzzle and a well defined stop. He had haze! round eyes which gave him a kindly expression although I preferred the winner’s expression. He had a decent length of neck and good forechest. He stood true in the front with strong bone. He was deep in brisket. He had well sprung ribs and good coupling. He had a level topline and strong well made hindquarters with wide and well muscled hindquarters, excellent deep 2nd thighs, stifles and well let down strong hocks. His round feet could have been tighter; He moved with plenty of push and drive from his strong rear throwing his right elbow on the return. He had a very happy disposition, but was also proud of his tail today.
