SOUTH EASTERN WELSH SPRINGER SPANIEL CLUB
CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW 20TH OCTOBER 2013

DOGS

I was particularly pleased to be asked to judge this show, when I am normally at the Secretary’s desk! Thank you to the exhibitors who voted for me and for those who entered. I had a lovely day with some really beautiful dogs to go over. I found one bad mouth and two level bites. Last time I judged I noted some wide fronts, this does seem better now, but there is a lack of forechest in some exhibits, and sometimes muscletone, the latter showed a lot in consequent movement. I was delighted with my winners and very pleased that my Co Judge, Mrs Carole Coode, agreed that my CC winner should be awarded Best in Show.

MINOR PUPPY (4)

1. Bond’s HILLPARK GOLDEN SUCCESSOR. Lovely puppy, who is very immature but then he is only 7 months of age. Gorgeous head and expression, excellent balance, good rib for age, Super length of neck into well laid shoulders, nice rear angulation. Lovely topline when he chose to show it! Moved true fore and aft. Fantastic temperament.
2. Duncan’s REDFRITH JACK OF DIAMONDS Liked this youngster a lot, moved really well and had better feet than my winner, however he is not as well angulated behind or in front, and his topline not as strong a this stage. He has lovely depth of chest and super ribbing.
3. Coffin’s HILLPARK LIGHTNING GOLD.

PUPPY (1)

1. Johnstone’s GLENBROWS PAPER MONEY FOR GILPETA. The handler of this dog needs to stand him before a mirror, to see that she is not presenting him to best advantage. He is a lovely young boy, with super head and expression. Good strong body for age. Lovely length of neck into well laid shoulders, excellent bone, he has good rear angulation when stood correctly. Fortunately in the challenge for Best Puppy, he stood and moved much better than in this class and I was happy to award him BEST PUPPY DOG.

JUNIOR (7 3abs)

1. Philipson’s MENSTON IA MARKSMAN. Another handler who needs to get a mirror! He is a very attractive youngster, lovely head and neck, really good layback of shoulder and return of upper arm, excellent forechest. Excellent balance, my notes say ‘super rear angulation’ but he does not always show it when stacked. Feet could be tighter. Great temperament. Moved straight and true with good drive.
2. Frost & Troth’s COCHNAID’S CARTIER TOPAZ. Lovely headed boy, good balance throughout, well boned and neat feet. Super ribbing. Topline tends to drop away slightly when stacked, but free he is fine. Moved really well.
3. Harrison’s GLENBROWS RAINMAN.

YEARLING (5)

1. Douglas’ FERNDEL JUSTIN TIME. Lovely young dog I have done well before. Super balance with excellent bone. Eye catching dog with super, correct outline. Good masculine head with kind expression, well ribbed up, short coupled in lovely coat and condition. Well off for bone and stands on lovely feet. Disappointed when he moved as he could have gone better behind, but he went with drive. If he strengthens in his rear movement, I am sure he can go to the top. Love him! Very close up for the Res CC.
2. Philipson’s MENSTON IA MARKSMAN. 3. Luckett-Roynon’s SOLVA GIORGIO.

MAIDEN (2)

1. Philipson’s MENSTON IA MARKSMAN. 2. Luckett-Roynon’s SOLVE VASIL. Well balanced dog, up to size with good lay of shoulder and kind head, lovely neck flowing into good topline. Well boned and lovely feet. Handler could not move him to advantage unfortunately, but what I did see was true fore and aft. Happy dog.

NOVICE (2 1abs)

1. Johnstone’s GLENBROWS PAPER MONEY FOR GILPETA.

GRADUATE (3)

1. Luckett-Roynon’s SOLVA GIORGIO. 3RD in the lovely Yearling class, but not disgraced by that. He is a dog you need to get your hands on to appreciate, nice head, dark eye, good dentition. Lovely lay of shoulder, good rib, good angulation both ends, excellent bone and lovely feet, good condition. Moved much better in this class although he still needed to go faster to exhibit any drive.
2. Stone’s STEDIGAN PIPERS PIPING. Mature dog with lovely head, not as good in lay of shoulder as my winner. Nice ribbing and good angulation behind, decent bone. Moved well with drive.
3. Frost & Troth’s COCHNAID’S CARTIER TOPAZ

POST GRADUATE (7 2abs)

1. Evans TYPICAL KINGFISHER. Out of a slightly more rangy mould than some, but beautifully balanced and correct in all departments. Really nice outline. Lovely head and expression, great bone and feet. Good length of neck into well laid shoulders, good forechest, straight front and super ribbing. Short coupled and moved really well. One in really fit condition with great muscletone. He has time on his side and I think he will be even better in another year.
2. Dobbie’s ROCKYPOINT MORSE CODE. I liked this dog a lot, preferred the topline of 3rd but this young dog has super head and expression, good neck and shoulder layback, with well angulated backend and great muscletone. Moved well with animation.
3. Wright’s AMBLELIGHT ALIOTH.

MID LIMIT (3)

1. Craig’s MR CHARLIE BOY. Cracking dog, with super head, not overdone in any way. Good length of neck into lovely lay of shoulder, great bone, lovely ribbing, short coupled, neat feet. Well coated. Moved well . However it was his tail that disappointed me, he carried this much too high for my choice, and for the requirements of the standard.
2. Johnstone’s FERNDEL SEEING STARS FOR GILPETA. Nice dog, really good head and expression and nicely balanced with super tight feet. Loses out in topline where he drops over the croup on the stand. Moved well.
3. Finlay’s CERYSAN ROBERT ROY.

LIMIT (4)

1. Caldwell & McDowell’s GEMILL BACK TO THE FUTURE FOR CERYSAN. ‘He came - he saw - he conquered’. Many will be aware that I have known this dog from a very early age, but today I judged him with a fresh eye and as I saw him in front of me. What a cracker, presented in perfect condition.
To be ultra critical I would prefer a tad more of him all over, however he is perfectly balanced, with a truly beautiful head with plenty of work in it, lovely dark expressive eyes , perfect dentition. His neck is of good length and clean, into well laid back shoulders and super length of upper arm, giving good forechest. Deep, well sprung ribs, short coupled and correct rear angulation, strongly boned and neat feet. Moved with great drive and animation. Well deserved 3rd CC and BIS.
2. Steadman’s STEDIGAN ONE IN TEN JW. This dog gives the impression of being of a smaller mould, but in fact he is of an acceptable height. Good male head, very short coupled, good lay of shoulder, well ribbed up, plenty of muscletone in his well rounded rear end, but a little more length and width of second thigh would please. Moved well and with animation.
3. Blackford’s AMBLELIGHT SAIPH.

OPEN (5 1abs)

This class had me cogitating more than any other, two quite different dogs in first two places, both of which I liked a lot, but only one could win. Both very masculine, you could never mistake either of them for a bitch! In the end I surprised myself with the placings.
1. Tew’s PAMICKS DAZZLING BOY. He is a little stronger in head than I prefer but nonetheless he is true to the standard. Although he was perhaps carrying a little too much weight on his shoulders today, his construction is exactly what I was looking for apart from the fact that he could do with slightly longer second thigh, this would perhaps allow him to move with a more flowing action, but he moves true both ways. His neck, shoulders, ribbing and couplings are as required, and in the end he beat 2 on maturity. Res CC
2. Barkley’s CHERRYHEATH’S MR MISCHIEF. If my winner had not been in the ring I would probably not have noted that this lovely young dog has still some maturing to do, in comparison to 1 he did look a little unfinished, but that is to be expected as he is still quite young. Loved his head and body properties, a little more width in second thigh would please me, but he moves with conviction, true both ways and has substantial bone and lovely feet. I am sure he will be made up with ease.
3. Walton’s AM CH COLE CREEK HAWK-EYE AT HILLPARK.

VETERAN (5 1abs)

1. Tubb’s PARKMIST MASTER DANCER FOR ALSUTU. An amazingly lively 12.5 year old dog, he moves with such conviction and with great drive. Well balanced with strong bone and nice feet. A very typical and old fashioned Welsh, and all the better for that in my opinion.
2. White’s FIERGEN BREAK DANCER. Almost 8 years old. Short coupled ‘young’ man, well boned, not quite the shoulder placement of my winner, decent ribbing, and moved well with drive.
3. Smith’s AMBLELIGHT MERCURY.

SPECIAL BEGINNERS (2)

1. Yacoub’s FERNDEL AMREN FOR LAITHMOOR. Attractive dog, a little feminine in head for me. Good rear angulation, but a little steep in upper arm. Moved well enough to take the class. Lovely coat and condition.
2. Cooper’s FIERGEN CITY LIMITS. Strong headed dog with super bone and nice feet. Where 1 could have been more masculine, this one is ALL male. Not as good in rear angulation and a little upright in shoulder. Moved OK.

SPECIAL WORKING DOG (2)

1. Steadman’s STEDIGAN ONE IN TEN JW. 2. Stone’s STEDIGAN PIPERS PIPING.

GOOD CITIZEN DOG SCHEME (5)

1. Isherwood’s AMBLELIGHT TRAPEZIUM STAR. This dog could do well if only he would learn to show himself off, he obviously needs strong handling and perhaps some lessons in ring handling for the owner!! He is a really nice youngster, he has a lovely head and neck which flows into good lay of shoulder and when he gets his front legs under him he shows off his good forechest. He needs his ribs to spring but this will come with time, great rear angulation and moves well when he chooses. Do work on him, he is worth it.
2. Tubb’s PARKMIST MASTER DANCER FOR ALSUTU. 3. Yacoub’s FERNDEL AMREN FOR LAITHMOOR.
